Dr Nomalanga Mashinini
I specialise in Information and Communications Technology Law, especially Image Rights. I focus on how social media and artificial intelligence influence the exploitation of people’s identities. I completed a Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree in 2021 at the University of Pretoria. My thesis is titled "The Recognition of Image Rights in the Context of Memes Shared on Social Media". Although memes are my speciality, I also research drones, deepfakes and innovations that affect image rights and data protection. In 2021, I started my research podcast ‘Image Rights by N Mashinini’. This creative output is an extension of my research dissemination strategy. Since its inception, the podcast has hosted 3 seasons that were downloaded in 42 countries and 202 cities in the world.
